Once he finds out he can't though, he's reduced to being cold and miserable and sticking by the edge of the forest near the school because he sees all these humans and does not want to interact with them, so obviously the best way to go about this is to wait until it's not so light outside and then go look for someplace warm. And to stay away from those people. Yes, perfect.

The journal's pretty much abandoned beside the tree he's pressing against in some effort of being warm there is a reason he has never gone any place cold in his canon and that is because he is 1. under-dressed for it and 2. from a tropical island. Good luck trying to talking to him or anything though, because he's pretty distrustful of anything remotely human.]

It looks like a normal book when closed, but it's really a communication device. Everyone has one. If someone records a message on theirs, everyone in the village can see it. So you can ask questions, make announcements, call for someone when you don't know where they are...

It's more like a videophone, even though it's shaped like a book.

What's a videophone?

A device in my world - a camera records the image of a person, and a microphone records their voice. And a screen displays another image, and speakers emit another voice. Two people, using videophones, can speak to one another and see the others' faces across great distances.

Got it. [He won't keep it on him all the time because a book's an easy thing to forget, but he'll try to remember most of the time! Probably stuck in the front of his jacket or something like that.]

...That's something that neither we nor the Malnosso control. It may be the world itself - people come and go at random. Some people stay for only a month or two. I've been here for a year.

I doubt it. I think the record is only a few years - three, maybe...and that's two people at most out of the hundreds that have ever been here.

Hundreds, wow... Don't other people notice if they're missing that long? [Not that anyone would notice Chien being missing beside Lady Mathias and his brothers - if they weren't around - but still.]

That's the other thing about these many worlds. People here are from many points in time, the pasts and futures of their worlds - and the moment you leave your world is the same moment you return. That's what everyone says.
